Liposuction |
| |
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that can help sculpt the shape of your body parts by removing accumulated fat. Some areas where Liposuction is effective include buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, upper arms, knees, chin, cheeks and neck. Although this treatment can not replace healthy diet and regular exercise, it can remove fat from areas where traditional weight loss methods have been ineffective.
Who can go for Liposuction?
If a person of normal weight or 10-15% overweight with firm, elastic skin but are unhappy with disproportionate fat accumulation in certain areas, he/she can go in for liposuction. Doctor will, however, evaluates him/ her on a few parameters before recommending this surgery. These include his/ her physical and psychological health as well as his/her expectations from the procedure. Though age is not a major factor, the results in older patients may be less satisfactory than those in younger ones due to reduced elasticity of the skin.
If he/she have medical problems such as diabetes, disease of the heart or lung, poor blood circulation, or if he/she have recently had surgery near the area to be sculpted, he/she may not be a candidate but this will be evaluated by Plastic Surgeon and his/her doctor.
How to prepare for the surgery? |

 |
|
He/ she must strictly follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon before surgery. These would include guidelines on eating, drinking and smoking, taking or avoiding vitamins, iron tablets and certain medications. If you develop a cold or an infection of any kind, especially a skin infection, his/her surgery may have to be postponed.
What happens during the surgery?
The surgery can be performed in an out-patient facility, or in a hospital. If only a small amount of fat needs removal, the surgery is usually performed as an out-patient basis. On the other hand, large fat removal or liposuction being done along with other procedures requires admission into a hospital.
To perform the surgery, his/her doctor makes small incisions and inserts a thin tube or cannula through this incision, to suction out the fat layer lying under the skin. The cannula is then moved through the fat layer to break down fat cells. A vacuum pump or a large syringe is used to suck out excessive fat. Along with fat, a lot of fluid is lost during surgery. To prevent the body from going into shock, this fluid is continuously replaced during and after the procedure with intravenous fluids.
What happens after the surgery?
After surgery, some fluid may trickle out from the incisions. His/her doctor may insert a small tube beneath the skin for a couple of days to drain out this fluid. You may be advised to wear a comfortable elastic garment over the treated skin for a few weeks. This will control swelling and help skin fit better over your new body shape. His/her doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
What precautions should you take after surgery?
As advised by your plastic surgeon, you must begin to walk around as soon as possible. This will reduce swelling and avoid blood clots from forming in your legs. He/she should also begin working within a few days after the surgery. His/her stitches will be removed or will dissolve on their own within 10days.
Healing is a slow process, so he/she must avoid strenuous activity for about a month. Usually, most of the bruising and swelling subsides within three weeks, but some swelling may continue for 3-6 months.
He/she should need to visit his/her plastic surgeon at prescribed intervals for follow-up care. These visits will help his/her surgeon to evaluate his/her progress and recommend a second procedure, if required.
