Neurology is a medical specialty dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Specifically, it deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of disease involving the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. Neurologists are trained to investigate, or diagnose and treat, neurological disorders.

Neurosurgery provides surgical repair and treatment of nervous system disorders. Conditions treated include brain and spinal cord tumors, aneurysms (bulge at a weak point of an artery), bleeding inside the skull, some birth defects like hydrocephalus and spina befida, epilepsy and nerve damage due to injury. Patients generally see a neurologist first and receive a referral to a neurosurgeon.
